quiet, clever and dignified building by peter zumthor in a context of potentially stifling complexity.
the sheer perfection of zumthor's museum was disturbing. I was reminded of the tennis coach who said that today, the player who makes the fewest mistakes ends up winning the tournament. I always found it hard to imagine anyone being excited about a lack of mistakes.
but buildings that are designed to last centuries don't have to win you over on the first date and my view of the kolumba has changed a lot since my visit, leaving little of my initial scepticism. much of the perfection and coldness of the place and its large, unbroken surfaces is the result of the architect holding back, holding his breath, keeping quiet in the face of so many existing layers and - of course - an art collection meant to be the main attraction.
What could be more boring than a limeworks museum? My wife even refused to buy a ticket, because she was not going to watch cement for money.
