Why is it important for children to choose some learning/play opportunities themselves?

Question by Dawn♥ I Love Allah (swt): Why is it important for children to choose some learning/play opportunities themselves?

Why should we encourage them to choose for themselves and make their own choices? By children I mean young young children who are around nursery/kindergarten stage.

Child initiated play is vital to allow children to demonstrate their interests, make connections, make chioces, explore and take supervised risks. Children need to be able to access an environment that allows them to choose resources and take the initiative to follow their own enquiries and use thier imagination to make sense of the world in their play. We as adults provide opportunites for children to do this and develop their creativity and critical thinking through engaging them in interaction about their play, rather than directing it.
